Last night's LivingRoom gathering was pretty interesting. We were supposed to have a topical night, but we ended up watching the taped news and responded to it together as a group. We watched three news items: (1) Earthquake Toll (2) Hit-Run case (3) Drink Driving.
I enjoyed the responses of my fellow LivingRoomers. We had times of discussion, reflection, minor debate, sharing of Scripture on the topic, moral issues and thoughts on philosophical principles. Then we closed with a time of prayer at the end. It was quite an enjoyable way of interaction and a good idea to share values and get to know one another.

Regarding the earthquake toll, I had a recent discussion with students from my class about the tsunami victims of Dec. 26. Garrett Hardin, in his life-boat ethics essay, says that we should not help those in less-fortunate situations. The world can only hold so many people, so letting others "die off" as harsh as it may sound, leads to a survival of the fittest and the weak, either in constitution or because of where they live (he uses the example of those starving in Africa) should be left to fend for themselves.
We understood the big picture and realism of his point, but also found it ethically and morally difficult to say that we should only watch after ourselves, be it as an individual or to watch after those in our own country. However, the US often gets in trouble when it does "help" whether it be by starting war with questionable agendas (Iraq) or offering monetary aid and assistance then being chided for the offer (the world told the US we should give more money but we couldn't offer troops to help rebuild).

I've a question... with a community like LivingRoom, which is not exactly mainstream, do you find that most in your community are of a similar political viewpoint, or is there a broad range?

wilsonian, that is a very interesting question. Since I am only new in LivingRoom, I don't exactly know everyone's political viewpoint very well, but I believe there is bound to be differences like anywhere (even in mainstream community).
