Health And Poverty

Health is a major symptom and cause of poverty. According to the World Bank "2005 Human Development Indicators" report, a number of factors are important when considering health:

  1. Access to nutritious food and supplements
  2. Access to clean water
  3. Access to decent sanitation facilities
  4. Access to medical treatment

Resolving these problems is not difficult. The technologies exist. The problem is the inability of the poor to access them!!

I agree with the last few sentences of your entry. Very true indeed.

I would have to say that if "resolving these problems is not difficult" then they would have been resolved long ago. Resolving these problems is EXCEEDINGLY difficult. Creating a shopping list of the technologies that would help their problem is about the only thing that is simple about this scenario. It is a very complex issue, relating to how the existing authorities distribute resources. Greedy, selfish human beings will always be the monkey wrench in the works when it comes to this kind of an issue. That is why such "simple" problems haven't been solved yet.

We always need to keep eternity in perspective with such issues as well. If we get the physically hungry well fed, and get them the BEST in health care, but they haven't been nourished with spiritual food, they are not that much better off. Jesus said to not fear him (hunger, disease...etc...in this case) who can destroy the body, but to fear Him who can destroy both body and soul! The same Jesus said you haven't helped your brother if he is hungry and you tell him to be "warmed and filled". But it isn't a matter of either or...but BOTH! :-)

Hi Greg, I've been reflecting on what you said here, and I have to agree with you that certainly resolving these issues of health and poverty is a matter of BOTH!
